Like I said earlier, that this post is focused n how to produce fish feeds. The production of the fish feed can be done using locally available composite materials which can be by-products of what we eat or left over of livestock animals such as bones, blood and excretes (manure) etc.

At times, most livestock farmers that don't have experience on the value of these raw materials, tend to dispose them, not knowing they are good source of nutrients for development and growth of fish.

Raw Materials Needed For The Production Of Locally Made Fish Feeds
The raw materials required for the production of local feed can be classified based on the nutrients they provide for the fish. They are classified as follows:

For Energy: Maize, full cream rice, wheat and some other grains can serve as energy giving feed to the fish.
Maize is rich in carbohydrate but it is quite difficult for the fish to absorb them directly, so it is being processed with other contents in low amount.

Wheat has soft texture, good elongation and elasticity which makes them much more easier to digest compared to maize. Because of its good elongation and elasticity characteristics, they can float on water.

Full cream rice is another source of energy for the fish but has high oxidative rancidity. So it is recommended to be careful when using them.

For minerals: Snail shell powder, egg shell powder, bone powder, calcium phosphate, are good sources of mineral nutrients required by the fish.

Addition of fatty content are required moderately in other to assist in the digestion of feed. Raw materials such as plantain, banana, cassava, garbage, yam and so on are good raw materials incooperated in the product of local fish feed.

Production Of Fish Feeds Using Local Raw Materials
There are certain factors that are taken into consideration during formulation of fish feed. There are different formulation specifications, this is because of the different nutrients needed by the fish. Different types of fishes have their own different varieties of nutritional requirements.

The nutritional requirements of a fish is determined by the proportion to which the classes of nutrients are being mixed in the production of their feeds. It is very important to know this in other to properly formulate fish feed. Below are the 6 steps on how to produce fish feed:

1. Collect all the raw materials listed above like the energy food, protein etc. in their required proportion.

2. Weigh the feed ingredients according to the required quantity denoted by the formulation specifications.

3. Grind all the ingredients into powdery form using a grinding fish mill.

4. Collect all the powdery ingredients from the grinding mill and feed them into the feed extruder, this converts them into fish pellets rather than remaining in that powdery form.

5. Dry the extruded pellets under the sun or with a feed dryer.

6. Then package all the dried pellets in bags. You are through with the production of feed.  But know that good storage is required for the feed to retain it's content. So make sure to store the feed in a cool and dry environment.

The rate at which fish farming and feed production is growing in Nigeria is quite high and fast. As time goes on, the demand for feed will increase and price will also follow the queue. So knowing how to formulate your own feed locally with help you the farmer and also reduce the importation of these feeds in Nigeria.
