Snail feeds formulation is one area in snail farming that most farmers don't know or thinks that they can't know it or understand it. But both ways of their thinking are wrong.

Remember at LiveStockSpot we give you practical steps on how to keep you farm healthy and make it profitable be it Pigs, Rabbits, Fish, snails, name it.

So today we will be looking at solving the biggest problem many encounter when farming snails. People do ask, how can i get feed for my snails? Others snails feed in the markets are so costly? I can't afford snails feeds outside there?

Please remember to read this through to the end to be able to comprehend the full processes of snail feed formulation

Now lets look  at the processes one after the other

  • FEED FORMULATION
  • BENEFITS OF USING FORMULATED FEED
  • DEMERITS
  • REQUIREMENTS FOR FEED FORMULATION
  • PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER FEED
  • FORMULATION FOR SNAIL
  • A SELF-MIX SNAIL FEED FORMULA

Now let us start with the first one
 FEED FORMULATION

WHAT IS FEED FORMULATION?

Feed formulation is the combination or is the mixture of two or more feed ingredients which may includes maize, groundnut cake, fish meal, soy bean meal, oyster shell, and bone meal, at different proportions to meet the particular need which are, growth, maintenance, reproduction of a specific animal here being snail using locally available feed resources at lowest possible cost.

BENEFITS OF USING FORMULATED FEED

  • It improves performance of the snail.
  • It can be used to meet the specific requirement of the animal.
  • It can be easily measured.
  • It saves time and energy.
  • It is good for commercial production of snail.
  • It can be stored for longer period.

DEMERITS

  • Knowledge of simple arithmetic to be used in combination is required.
  • It is some how expensive.
  • Milling machine is required for grinding.

REQUIREMENT FOR FEED FORMULATION

  • The feed Nutrients requirement of the snails must be known before a good formulation can be achieved.
  • The very Cost of the necessary feed ingredients must be known for effective cost management.
  • The Nutrients composition of the each feed ingredients is essential.
  • The Availability of the feed ingredients.
  • As pointed out before, Little knowledge of arithmetic is required.
  • The state (health, stages of reproduction) of the animal must be known.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER SNAIL FEED FORMULATION

  • Avoid using adulterated, mouldy or contaminated ingredients for the formulation.
  • The ingredients must be properly and carefully dried.
  • To get the required result, be sure that the ingredients are weighed correctly.
  • The feed must be ground to finest particle size
  • The finish feed must be stored in well ventilated dry place.

we have gone through many steps to produce our individual snails feed. Now let us see the quantity of each snails feed ingredients

FEED FORMULATION INGREDIENTS MEANING

What is wheat offal
  • Its the waste product of wheat during processing
  • It contain the chaff and glutenous part of wheat seed

Bone meal

  • Bone meal is normal cattle bone or other bone like ( goat ,pig ,etc)
  • But cattle is mainly been use because of its abundance

Fish meal

  • Your fish bones and other part of the fish

pro vitamins and mineral
  • You get it from those who sell animal feed as a premix

Groundnut cake

  • Groundnuts cakes are the common kuli kuli

Soyabean meal
  • Is your main soya bean you dry and grind i.e is the whole bean ground but soya bean cake is obtained after the extraction of oil or milk from the beans.

PKC

  • It's the remains of Palm kernel after the oil has been extracted.
  • You can get this too in the market

Maize

  • Is your normal maize( dry ) grind

Oyster shell
  • Is shell of oyster dry and grind

With all the above ingredients and their different formulation in kg, you can get your snails feed less costly.

There is another thing that you need to know for your snails good health. This is the snails diseases, pests and predators.

SNAILS DISEASES, PEST AND PREDATORS

Snails are prone to attacks by diseases, pest and predators. Protection against these predators is an essential condition for successful snail farming.

Predators and pests are enemies of snails who inhibit their productivity and survival; hence, for a successful snails farming to be achieved, carefully placed effort should be taken to prevent pest an predators inversion into the snailery.

The major pest and predators are anthropoids such as insects like carabid beetle, minute insects, millipedes, centipedes, birds, reptiles like snakes, lizards, wall geckos, ants like red ants, soldier ants, and termites, amphibians like toads, frogs, rodents like moles, mice, rats and man.

In addition to poor feeding and poor management practices, predators and pests can from time to time cause problems to your snails. The effect of these problems can be seen on the behavior and appearance of these snails with visible symptoms.

PREVENTION OF PEST AND PREDATORS IN SNAILS FARM

  • Treat snails before introducing them to the stock with alum or lemon-water which is also known as alum/lemon bath; dip them into the container containing the solution for at most 3 seconds.
  • Sterilize or pre-heat the soil substrate to check parasites and pests infestation.
  • Good and well-constructed snailery with netting's and gauze prevents pests and predators from entry. Adopt good hygiene and management.
  • Snails are not subject to viral infections. There are little established diseases of snails.

SIGNS OF ILL HEALTH IN SNAILS

  • Inactiveness
  • Dryness of the fleshy part
  • Nodules on the surface of the snail
  • Loss of weight
  • Loss of appetite
